In view of the growing population, and the Flood Risk Prevention Plan prohibiting the extension of the current premises, the commune of Saint-Cécile-les-Vignes has decided to create a socio-educational centre, close to the college, the gymnasium and the stadium.

 

Playful treatment of the school’s lighting, using original geometric shapes (triangular and tubular among others)

 

A word from the architect, Christian Mendez :

 

The architectural composition is based on the lines of force of the landscape and the climatic factors of the site.

 

The exterior spaces and courtyards are protected from the wind by the shape of the buildings.

The architectural composition is designed to achieve good energy performance in both winter and summer (making the most of solar gain, optimising natural ventilation, solar protection, compactness of the building!)

 

The volume of the buildings favours the penetration of daylight (roof stalls, patios!) and transparency. All spaces whose circulation is illuminated with natural light, either from openings in the facade or through high openings on the sides of the roofs and elevations.

To the south, roof overhangs, courtyards and awnings protect the premises from summer sunlight.

 

The construction has a mixed structure combining masonry parts, wood cladding facades, tiled roofs and flat roofs.

The materials are left natural: raw concrete, untreated cladding, lime plaster and wooden joinery.

 

Summer comfort is ensured by the inertia of the building, the ventilation of the premises, and sun protection of various kinds: awnings, shading and claustra, shade trees.

 

The performance of the project is ensured by the architectural design of the building :

 

– compactness of the constructions,

– south-facing with sun protection for the main premises

– double orientation of the common rooms for natural ventilation

– important role given to thermal inertia by the structure of the frame itself

– high level of insulation and good airtightness

– double-flow ventilation with a high level of energy recovery

– abundant natural light

– circulators, and air blowers

 

Outdoor areas :

 

The plant species used in the green spaces are local species, the principle being to ensure the continuity of the landscape in the outdoor facilities.

The plants are selected to require a minimum of maintenance and not to generate allergies. They are adapted to the Mediterranean climate and the particularities of the site.
